Bosa is the principal town of its municipality in the province of Oristano, on the island of Sardinia. It lies between rolling hills and the sea, with the coastline to the southwest and higher ground to the north. The town’s position beside the Temo River is central to its identity, linking its historic streets with the landscape around it.

What to see in Bosa

The Temo River and Bosa’s historic centre

The Temo River runs through the heart of Bosa, beside the town’s main thoroughfare and below the nineteenth-century bridge. Historic bridges connect different parts of the town, while the river helps frame views of the colorful hillside houses.

The historic district of Sa Costa is one of the best places to experience Bosa’s character. Its narrow lanes, stairways, and closely packed homes reflect centuries of everyday life. Walking without a fixed route allows the changing colors of the façades, small artistic details, and occasional murals to emerge gradually.

Castle of Serravalle

The Castle of Serravalle, also known as Malaspina Castle, stands high above Bosa’s rooftops. The Malaspina family began building the stronghold around the 1250s, after the local Torres judicate lost control of this part of Sardinia.

The castle was expanded over the centuries by Arborean, Aragonese, and Spanish rulers. Its defenses developed from a medieval core into a larger walled enclosure, with later bastions adapted for cannon fire. The position was strategically important: the castle stood on the northern frontier of the Arborean judicate and guarded what was once one of Sardinia’s busiest ports.

The ramparts reveal the different stages of the fortress’s history, from the original medieval structure to the later fortifications that eventually enclosed the plateau. Inside the walls is Nostra Signora de Regnos Altos.

Nostra Signora de Regnos Altos

This small church stands within the ancient walls of Serravalle Castle. Its interior contains a remarkable cycle of fourteenth-century frescoes. The identity of the artists remains debated: some interpretations connect the paintings with Italian artistic traditions, while others see links with the Iberian school.

Its setting makes the church especially memorable. The building is not separate from the castle’s history but tucked directly into the old fortified complex above Bosa.

Bosa Cathedral

Bosa Cathedral, officially the Concattedrale dell’Immacolata Concezione, stands in the historic centre between Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and the Temo River. Dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, it is a co-cathedral of the Diocese of Alghero-Bosa.

Before the diocese was merged in 1986, the cathedral was the seat of the Bishop of Bosa and the spiritual centre of the city for centuries. Its position beside the river and near the nineteenth-century bridge connects the religious heart of Bosa with its main urban route.

Sant’Antonio Abate

The church of Sant’Antonio Abate stands outside what were once Bosa’s ancient city walls. This explains its description as extra muros, meaning “outside the walls.” During the period of Aragonese rule, it was also known as Sant Anton del Pont because of its position beside the bridge over the Temo River.

The church is a useful stop for understanding how Bosa developed beyond its original fortified boundaries.

Madonna del Carmine

The Church of Madonna del Carmine occupies the piazza that bears its name. Its façade later influenced the design of the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, making the two buildings part of the same visual story within Bosa’s historic centre.

Madonna del Rosario

The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary stands on Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Although the building was extensively remodeled in the nineteenth century, its main portal comes from an earlier church. The Mannerist portal features pilasters, an architrave with a diamond-point pattern, and a relief of the Madonna and Child beneath a curved, broken pediment.

The upper façade is divided into three sections by pilasters with Ionic capitals. A round-arched window sits in the centre, below a large double-faced public clock added in 1875. Above it, a slender bell gable completes the church’s profile.

San Pietro Extra Muros

A short distance from Bosa, along the left bank of the Temo River, stands San Pietro Extra Muros. It is one of Sardinia’s oldest Romanesque churches and once served as the cathedral of the Diocese of Bosa.

Construction began in 1053 at the request of Bishop Costantino de Castra, and the building was completed around 1073. Its name again means “outside the walls”, describing its position beyond the town’s defenses. The countryside setting makes it a natural extension to a visit focused on Bosa’s historic centre.

Museums in Bosa

Bosa’s museums add local history and art to its streets and churches.

  • Museo delle Conce explores one of the town’s dedicated museum spaces.
  • Museo casa Deriu is housed in a historic Bosa residence.
  • Pinacoteca Antonio Atza is the town’s main museum and contains artworks connected to the local area.

Together, these museums offer a way to look beyond Bosa’s colorful façades and understand the town through its domestic history, local culture, and artistic production.

Torre Argentina

Outside Bosa, Torre Argentina stands on the Punta Argentina promontory. The coastal tower was built between 1580 and 1584 during Spanish rule over Sardinia.

It formed part of a wider network of coastal fortifications. Guards stationed there watched the Mediterranean and signaled warnings when danger appeared, giving inland communities time to prepare. The tower combines a coastal viewpoint with a clear reminder of the defensive system that once protected Sardinia’s shores.

Other historic churches

Bosa’s religious heritage also includes the Sacred Heart church, the Church of Saint John the Baptist, and the Church of Saint Philomena. They complement the better-known cathedral, castle church, and riverside churches, adding further layers to the town’s historic landscape.
