What to See in Riva del Garda

Rocca di Riva and MAG Museo Alto Garda

Rocca di Riva, also known as La Rocca, is a medieval fortress built on an artificial islet along the shore of Lake Garda. The water fortress is one of Riva del Garda’s most distinctive landmarks.

The fortress is first mentioned in the fourteenth century. Much of its present appearance reflects nineteenth-century alterations, when it served as a barracks for the Austro-Hungarian army. Today, Rocca di Riva houses MAG Museo Alto Garda, the town’s museum, where visitors can discover the Alto Garda area in a museum setting.

Bastione

The Bastione rises above Riva del Garda on the Germandri hill, overlooking the town and the old harbour. Built by the Venetian Republic at the beginning of the sixteenth century, it formed part of a former Venetian defensive system.

Its position makes the purpose of the fortification easy to understand: the structure was designed to dominate the settlement and harbour below. It is one of the most memorable places to include in a Riva del Garda self-guided walking tour.

Porta San Marco and Porta San Michele

Riva’s historic entrances include the city gates known as Porta San Marco and Porta San Michele. These monuments offer a simple way to encounter the town’s built heritage while moving between the old centre and its surrounding streets.

The gates are especially well suited to exploring on foot, alongside the squares, churches and palaces of the historic centre.

Inviolata Church

The Chiesa dell’Inviolata is one of Riva del Garda’s most important architectural landmarks. This Catholic church stands in Largo Guglielmo Marconi, in an area that was once outside the inhabited centre.

Built in the Baroque style at the beginning of the seventeenth century, it is also known as the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary Inviolata. Its early seventeenth-century origins make it an important reminder of the town’s architectural history.

Saints Peter and Paul Church

The Saints Peter and Paul Church is also known as Santi Pietro e Paolo. It is also referred to locally as Parrocchia di S. Alessandro and Chiesa parrocchiale dei SS. Pietro e Paolo.

The church adds another layer to Riva’s religious and architectural heritage and can be visited as part of a route through the town.

Palazzo Riccamboni

Forte San Nicolò

Near the shores of Lake Garda, on the lower slopes of Monte Brione, Forte San Nicolò is also known as the San Nicolò Battery. This former Austro-Hungarian military work belonged to the Fortress of Riva.

The fort had two connected roles. As a coastal battery, it watched the waters of Lake Garda. As a road barrier, it could use an iron gate to block the route between Riva del Garda and Torbole. Most of its guns faced across the lake, where the battery was intended to prevent infantry from landing on the relatively flat beaches near Riva. Powerful spotlights were also used to search and illuminate the water at night.

Fortezza di Riva

Fortezza di Riva stood at the northern tip of Lake Garda as part of Austria’s system of defensive works along the border with Italy. Its role was to protect the flank of the larger fortress at Trento.

The fort therefore belonged to a wider defensive network rather than functioning as an isolated stronghold. Its story helps explain why the area around Riva contains so many military structures.

Werk Tombio

Above Varone on Monte Tombio are the remains of Werk Tombio, also known as Forte Tombio. It was the northwestern defensive work of the Riva fortress system, built to control the valleys and mountain routes around the northern end of Lake Garda.

The complex included a reinforced-concrete main work, underground chambers cut into the rock, barracks, machine-gun outworks and a forward roadblock near Pranzo. Another position, Tombio Piccolo, guarded the road between Campi and Lunzo.

The main fort was surrounded by a rock-cut moat and had an observation turret. Its design reflects a period when military architecture was moving between older fortification ideas and newer concrete defensive works.

Churches around Riva del Garda

The surrounding localities add further places of worship to the area. In Varone, the Church of the Annunciation of Mary dates from the nineteenth century and serves as the parish church.

In Pregasina, the Church of Saint George, or Chiesa di San Giorgio, dates from the seventeenth century and remains the hamlet’s parish church. Pregasina is also home to Regina Mundi, a statue marking a viewpoint stop with a distinctive presence.
