Things to Do in Ponta Delgada: What to See in the Azores
Ponta Delgada is the historic capital of São Miguel and a natural starting point for exploring the Azores. Its harbour, churches, palaces, museums and volcanic landmarks reveal the island’s history, while black basalt and whitewashed façades give the city centre a distinctive character. Neywo offers a free audio guide for Ponta Delgada with 21 narrated places.
What to See in Ponta Delgada
The city is compact enough to explore on foot, with historic buildings and cultural sites concentrated around its centre. These are some of the most important places to include in your visit.
Fort Saint Blaise
Fort Saint Blaise, or Forte de São Brás, stands beside the harbour. Built in the sixteenth century on a point of the original anchorage, it protected Ponta Delgada from pirate and corsair raids in the Atlantic. Its structure is a clear example of sixteenth-century military architecture.
Church of São José
The Church of São José occupies the historic centre, on the site of the former Campo de São Francisco. Together with the adjoining Convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, it was recognised as a Property of Public Interest in 1953. The complex is an important part of Ponta Delgada’s architectural heritage.
Church of Nossa Senhora da Esperança
The Church of Nossa Senhora da Esperança forms part of the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Esperança, a religious complex founded in the early sixteenth century. It stands in Campo de São Francisco and contains the chapel of the Sanctuary of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres.
The convent has maintained its religious life without interruption. Its sacred art collection is considered among the most important in Portugal, making this one of the city’s key places for understanding the religious traditions of the Azores.
Conceição Palace and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição
Conceição Palace was built at the end of the nineteenth century on the site of the former Convento da Conceição. Several original monastery structures were incorporated into the complex, including the Church of the Immaculate Conception, a late-seventeenth-century example of baroque architecture.
The nearby Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição adds another historic place of worship to this part of the city. Together, the palace and church recall the religious buildings that once shaped this quarter of Ponta Delgada.
Fonte Bela Palace
Fonte Bela Palace is a cultural heritage monument in the centre of Ponta Delgada. It is one of the city’s historic palaces and fits naturally into a walk through the old centre, alongside its churches, museums and public buildings.
Carlos Machado Museum
The Carlos Machado Museum is the oldest museum in the Azores. It began in 1876 as the Museu Açoriano, founded by professor and naturalist Carlos Maria Gomes Machado. Today, it operates under the Government of the Azores and preserves aspects of the islands’ cultural and natural heritage.
The museum is divided among three exhibition nuclei: the former Convent of Santo André, the Sacred Art nucleus in the Church of All Saints, and the Santa Bárbara nucleus. Its history reflects the development of museum activity throughout the archipelago.
Church of the Jesuit College
The Church of the Jesuit College is also known as the Igreja de Todos-os-Santos. It was part of the Jesuit College of All Saints, a religious and educational complex founded by the early settlers of the Azores.
The building now houses the sacred art collection of the Carlos Machado Museum. One of its highlights is The Coronation of the Virgin by Vasco Pereira Lusitano. The architectural complex was designated a Property of Public Interest in 1953.
Santa Bárbara Museum Nucleus
The Museu Carlos Machado – Núcleo de Santa Bárbara is another cultural heritage monument in Ponta Delgada. As one of the museum’s three exhibition nuclei, it extends the city’s collection of cultural sites beyond the former convent and the Church of All Saints.
Palácio José do Canto and Jardim José do Canto
Palácio José do Canto is a cultural heritage monument in Ponta Delgada. Nearby, Jardim José do Canto offers a botanical garden setting within the city. Also known as Jardim Botânico José do Canto, it has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1995.
The palace and garden make a natural pair for a walk focused on the great Azorean families and the historic landscapes they created.
Palácio de Sant’Ana
Palácio de Sant’Ana, also known as the Palácio da Presidência, is a notable landmark on São Miguel. Its presence adds a political and civic dimension to Ponta Delgada’s group of historic palaces.
Ermida de Sant’Ana and its ruins
The Ermida e ruínas do Recolhimento de Sant’Ana is a cultural heritage monument encountered while walking through Ponta Delgada. The chapel and remaining ruins offer another glimpse of the city’s religious history.
Centro Municipal de Cultura
The Centro Municipal de Cultura is an art gallery in Ponta Delgada. It provides a contemporary cultural stop among the city’s historic buildings and religious monuments.
Gruta do Carvão
Gruta do Carvão is a lava tube on São Miguel, formed by flowing lava. It stretches for about 1,912 metres and consists of four sections: Paim, Secadores de Tabaco, João do Rego and José Bensaúde. Only the Paim section is currently accessible to visitors, allowing you to walk through part of this ancient volcanic conduit.
Its name means “Grotto of Coal”, referring to the dark, coal-like colour of the volcanic rock. It is one of the clearest places in and around Ponta Delgada to encounter São Miguel’s volcanic character.
