The property began with Frederick Philipse the First, a Dutch-born settler who expanded his landholdings after buying out two partners. In 1693, he received a royal charter for an estate covering 52,000 acres, or about 21,000 hectares, and became its first lord.

The manor house was built where the Pocantico River met the Hudson River. This location made the estate a supply point for plantation owners and a place where goods could be transferred towards the Atlantic Ocean. The trading post was also used for more than thirty years to bring enslaved people from Africa, an essential part of the site’s history.

After Frederick Philipse the First died, the manor was divided between his son and grandson. The estate was eventually confiscated during the American Revolution after Frederick Philipse the Third, its final lord, was declared guilty of treason by New York’s revolutionary government in 1779.
