What to See in Bassano del Grappa

Castle of the Ezzelini

The Castle of the Ezzelini, also known locally as the Castello degli Ezzelini or the upper castle, is a medieval fortification that has watched over Bassano del Grappa for centuries. During the Middle Ages, it was the seat of the powerful Ezzelini family.

Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta in Colle

The Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta in Colle is the most important Catholic church in Bassano del Grappa. It serves as the mother church for the diocese of Vicenza and anchors the Bassano del Grappa-Rosà vicariate.

Palazzo Bonaguro

Beside the Old Bridge in the Angarano district, Palazzo Bonaguro is a handsome fifteenth-century building with a long connection to life along the Brenta River. Its position near the historic bridge made it a natural landmark for travelers and merchants. Today, it is one of the four venues belonging to Bassano’s civic museums, with collections about the city and its territory.

Bassano Civic Museum

The Bassano Civic Museum stands in Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi and has been part of the city’s cultural life since 1828. Its location makes it a natural stop while exploring one of the central squares.

Giuseppe Roi Ceramic Museum

The Giuseppe Roi Ceramic Museum is housed in Palazzo Sturm, an eighteenth-century palace beside the Brenta River. The museum has occupied the building since 1992, bringing its ceramic collection into a historic setting.

Museo Remondini

Also located inside Palazzo Sturm, the Museo Remondini is dedicated to the art and industry of printing. The museum follows roughly two hundred years of history, from the mid-seventeenth century to the mid-nineteenth century, focusing on the Remondini family and the printed materials they produced.

Traditional printed panels are accompanied by documentaries and multimedia displays, helping explain the family’s importance as an industrial phenomenon of its time.

Museo degli Alpini

The Museo degli Alpini is in the basement of the Taverna degli Alpini beside the Old Bridge. Opened in 1950, it preserves the memory of Italy’s Alpini mountain troops and their role in the Great War.

The collection includes helmets, shells, shrapnel, barbed wire, period photographs and handwritten manuscripts. Many artifacts came from the Asiago plateau and the slopes of Monte Grappa, while others were donated by private families. Among the collection’s notable objects are propaganda leaflets dropped over Vienna by the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio during his flight in August 1918.

Poli Grappa Museum

The Poli Grappa Museum is dedicated to grappa and forms part of Bassano del Grappa’s connection with Italy’s celebrated spirit. It is one of the stops included in the walk through the town’s historic heart.

Tempio Ossario

The Tempio Ossario is a monumental church inaugurated in May 1934. It was originally conceived as a new cathedral for Bassano del Grappa, but its purpose changed: it became a military shrine and ossuary for soldiers who died during the First World War.

The building therefore combines religious architecture with remembrance, reflecting the town’s connection to the history of the war.

Villa Angarano

Villa Angarano is one of the Palladian villas of the Veneto countryside and has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site since 1996, as part of the collective listing for Andrea Palladio’s villas.

Palladio conceived the villa around 1548, but only the two lateral wings were built from his designs. The central block was completed later, in the seventeenth century, by the Venetian architect Baldassare Longhena. The result brings together Palladio’s wings and Longhena’s later central structure.

Villa Rezzonico

Villa Rezzonico, also known as Ca’ Rezzonico di Bassano, is a Venetian villa in Bassano del Grappa, in the province of Vicenza.

Villa Giusti and Palazzon

Villa Giusti is another historic villa in Bassano del Grappa. Palazzon, meanwhile, is a ruined building within the municipality. Both add to the range of historic sites beyond the best-known landmarks of the central streets.

Churches beyond the center

Several smaller religious buildings reveal the character of Bassano del Grappa’s different districts and hamlets. The Holy Cross Church serves the community of Campese, a hamlet within the municipality, and belongs to the diocese of Padova. The Saint Bobo hermitage, known locally as the Chiesetta di San Bovo, is a small church in the municipality.
