Things to Do in Oradour-sur-Glane: A Village Preserved in Memory
The main thing to do in Oradour-sur-Glane is visit the preserved ruins of the original village, a memorial to the civilians murdered there on 10 June 1944. The old settlement was not rebuilt after the massacre; instead, its damaged streets and buildings were left as a place of remembrance beside the new village. Neywo offers a free audio guide to Oradour-sur-Glane with three narrated places, available in 11 languages.
Oradour-sur-Glane is in the Haute-Vienne department of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, in France. It is not a conventional sightseeing destination, but a solemn historical site where the remains of an entire community bear witness to the violence of the German occupation.
What to see in Oradour-sur-Glane
The preserved village and the massacre memorial
The preserved ruins are the central place to see in Oradour-sur-Glane. On 10 June 1944, a company of the Waffen-SS destroyed the village and murdered its inhabitants. The victims included men, women and children; the long-recorded total was 642, with a 643rd victim identified in 2019.
The old village was looted and set on fire. The men were gathered in barns and sheds, while the women and children were herded into the church. People who tried to escape were shot. Only six people are known to have survived: five men and one woman.
The massacre followed German claims that resistance activity in the area had to be punished collectively. It is regarded as the largest massacre of civilians committed by German forces in France.
Walking through the site today means seeing the original streets and damaged buildings rather than a reconstruction. Burned homes, workshops, vehicles and everyday objects remain part of the memorial landscape. Their presence makes the history concrete: this was an inhabited village, not a monument built later to represent one.
After the war, a completely new Oradour-sur-Glane was constructed nearby. The historic village was deliberately left untouched, while ordinary life continued in the new settlement. The result is a place where the present and the past stand side by side.
Église Saint-Martin-de-Tours d’Oradour-sur-Glane
The remains of the former Église Saint-Martin-de-Tours, also known as Église Saint-Martin, stand within the preserved village. The church is kept as a ruin and has a stark, memorable presence among the damaged streets and buildings.
It is closely connected to the story of the massacre, when women and children were gathered inside the church. Its ruined state is therefore not simply architectural evidence of the fire: it forms part of the testimony preserved at Oradour-sur-Glane.
Église Saint-Martin d’Oradour-sur-Glane
The new village has its own Église Saint-Martin, a Catholic church built as part of the Oradour-sur-Glane rebuilt after the destruction of the historic settlement. It belongs to the postwar village rather than the preserved ruins.
Seeing the two churches helps distinguish the two parts of Oradour-sur-Glane: the former church remains as a ruin in the memorial site, while the newer Église Saint-Martin serves the village that was created after 1944.
How to visit Oradour-sur-Glane respectfully
Oradour-sur-Glane is a place of remembrance rather than a leisure attraction. The most meaningful way to experience it is to move through the preserved streets attentively, taking in the damaged buildings and objects that remain in place.
The site’s importance lies in its authenticity. The ruins are not a reconstruction or a themed historical display; they are the remains of the village destroyed during the massacre. They preserve the memory of the civilians who lived there and of the violence that ended their lives.
