Things to Do in Béziers: What to See in the Historic City

Béziers is a historic city in Occitania shaped by medieval heritage, religious architecture, the Orb River, and the wine-growing landscape of southern France. Its cathedral, old bridge, Canal du Midi engineering, museums, markets, and gardens make it rewarding to explore on foot. Neywo offers a free audio guide for Béziers with 30 narrated places.

What to See in Béziers

Béziers Cathedral

The Cathédrale Saint-Nazaire-et-Saint-Celse stands on a rocky promontory at the western edge of Béziers’ medieval city. The Gothic cathedral dates from the thirteenth century and occupies the site of an earlier building destroyed during the Massacre at Béziers in 1209, during the Albigensian Crusade against the Cathars.

Its position above the Orb plain gives it one of the city’s most striking viewpoints. From the terrace, the landscape extends towards the Montagne Noire, the Caroux and, on clear days, the Pyrenees. The cathedral was also the seat of the Bishops of Béziers until the Concordat of 1801.

Pont Vieux

The Pont Vieux is Béziers’ Old Bridge, crossing the Orb River below the cathedral. The stone bridge was first documented in 1134, although its foundations reuse the bases of an earlier Roman bridge. For centuries, it was the only crossing at Béziers and formed an important link on the route between Provence and Toulouse.

The bridge is about 240 metres long and has fifteen unequal arches. Seven cross the river, while eight extend across the floodplain. Its original roadway was only about three and a half metres wide; it was widened in the late fifteenth century to more than five metres.

Orb Aqueduct

The Orb Aqueduct is one of the Canal du Midi’s major engineering landmarks. The stone structure carries the canal over the Orb River and measures 240 metres long and 28 metres wide, making it the longest aqueduct on the waterway.

It opened in 1858, replacing the earlier arrangement in which boats had to leave the canal and navigate the river. The project also included the Orb Lock, the Béziers Lock and a new canal basin. The aqueduct is a powerful reminder of how the Canal du Midi was adapted to make navigation more reliable.

Basilique Saint-Aphrodise

The Basilique Saint-Aphrodise is a Romanesque basilica in Béziers. Its medieval architecture adds another layer to the city’s religious heritage alongside the cathedral and other historic churches.

Église de la Madeleine

The Église de la Madeleine stands in the heart of Béziers and has been recognized as a monument historique since 1987. Its protected status reflects the building’s architectural and cultural importance in the region.

Église Saint-Jacques

The Église Saint-Jacques is a Romanesque church and one of Béziers’ medieval survivors. Its architecture recalls the city’s long history of transformation while preserving a distinctly Romanesque character.

Plateau des Poètes

The Plateau des Poètes is an English-style garden created at the end of the nineteenth century. Its winding paths provide a peaceful change of pace from the historic centre and offer a pleasant setting for a quiet walk.

Halles centrales de Béziers

Les Halles, Béziers’ central market hall, stand in the heart of the city. The building is a listed historic monument and adds a strong local presence to the city centre.

Musée Taurin

The Musée Taurin explores the world of bullfighting in Béziers. It is housed in a former Dominican convent on Rue Massol, which has been its home since 2015. The permanent exhibition presents the culture and history of bullfighting in Béziers and places it within the wider French and Spanish tradition.

The collection includes habits de lumières, traditional weapons and historical objects. One notable highlight is a set of forty etchings from the third edition of Francisco de Goya’s La Tauromaquia, reproduced in Paris in 1876 by Eugène Loizelet from Goya’s original plates.

Béziers Town Hall

The Hôtel de Ville stands on Place Gabriel Péri in the centre of Béziers. The municipal building has served as the city’s administrative centre for generations and was officially recognized as a historic monument in 1935.

Protestant Temple

The Protestant Temple of Béziers stands on Place du Temple and belongs to the local parish of the United Protestant Church of France. Its location gives the square a distinctive religious and architectural identity.

Château de Libouriac

Château de Libouriac is a late nineteenth-century wine estate on the route de Pézenas. Built between 1883 and 1885, it combines neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance details, including pointed arches, decorative gables and classical pilasters.

The château, its outbuildings and the surrounding park have been protected as a historical monument since 1995. Together, they illustrate the importance of wine production to the Béziers area.

Château de Poussan-le-Haut

Château de Poussan-le-Haut is a historic château in the Béziers landscape. It has been protected as a historic monument since 1975, recognizing its place in the region’s heritage.

Château Saint-Bauzille

Château Saint-Bauzille is a nineteenth-century wine estate and an example of the grand viticultural châteaux associated with the Biterrois region. The château, outbuildings and park have been protected as a historical monument since 2007.

After a period of neglect, restoration began in the 1980s. The property’s design reflects the traditional organization of these estates, with the residence serving as the centre of a working wine domain.

Musée du Biterrois

The Musée du Biterrois has permanently closed, and its collections are being moved to a new home. For nearly two centuries, it was Béziers’ main museum of art, history and natural science.

Founded in 1834, the museum held archaeology, paleontology, ethnology and natural history collections covering subjects from the region’s earliest human presence to the Roman era, the Albigensian repression, the Canal du Midi and the wine revolts. It occupied more than 3,000 square metres of a former military barracks built in 1702.
