Kydonia

The ancient city of Kydonia lies beneath modern Chania, with its archaeological remains found east of the old Venetian port. It was a Minoan and Mycenaean palace centre that later became a city‑state trading along Crete’s north coast as early as the fourteenth century BC.

Firka Fortress

At the western entrance to the Venetian harbor stands Firka Fortress, a red‑walled Venetian stronghold that once guarded the harbor with cannons and harbor‑blocking chains. Today it houses the Nautical Museum of Crete, and in 1913 the Greek flag was raised here to mark Crete’s union with Greece.

Etz Hayyim Synagogue

A short walk into the Old Town reveals Etz Hayyim Synagogue, the only surviving synagogue on Crete and the last trace of the island’s Romaniote Jewish community. Built in a former Venetian church in the seventeenth century, it was restored in the mid‑1990s and rededicated in October 1999, now serving as a place of prayer and remembrance.

Souda Fortress

A little farther along the coast you encounter Souda Fortress, a medieval stronghold within the Municipality of Chania. Its stone walls hint at the defensive role it once played overlooking Souda Bay.

Aptera Fortress

Near the village of Aptera, on a hill above Souda Bay, sits Aptera Fortress. Built between 1867 and 1868 by Hüseyin Avni Pasha, its pi‑shaped layout with two southern circular towers was intended to watch the Apokoronas valley and support nearby Izzeddin Fortress.

Archaeological Museum of Chania

Opened to the public in April 2022, the Archaeological Museum of Chania in Halepa displays around 3,500 ancient objects from the Neolithic through Roman periods. The modern, linear building covers 6,000 square metres, with 2,000 square metres devoted to exhibition spaces.

Assumption Cathedral, Chania

The Roman Catholic Cathedral of Chania stands in the Old Town with a neoclassical façade, Renaissance touches and a bell tower topped by a blue dome completed in 1882. It replaced an earlier chapel and became the cathedral after the Diocese of Crete was established in 1874.

Agia Triada Monastery

On the Akrotiri peninsula, Agia Triada Monastery dates from 1611 and reflects a blend of Mount Athos and Western architectural influences. Its fortified complex encloses a central courtyard and has served various roles over the centuries, from monastic life to a wartime hospital.

Arkoudiotissa Cave

Also known as Bear Cave, this chapel on the Akrotiri peninsula features a stalagmite that resembles a crouching bear. According to local legend, the Virgin Mary turned a bear to stone after monks prayed for help reaching the cave’s water. The site also has older sacred ties to Artemis and Apollo.

Moni Katholiko (Monastery of Saint John the Hermit)

Further into the Avlaki Gorge lie the ruins of Moni Katholiko, a former Orthodox monastery abandoned but still evocative. Its sixteenth‑ or seventeenth‑century buildings include a stone‑built church, a vaulted courtyard and a sixteenth‑century bridge built by Ieremias Tzagkarolos that links the church to the opposite slope.

Battle of Crete

Chania’s surroundings are linked to the pivotal 1941 airborne invasion known as the Battle of Crete. The fierce resistance by Allied and Greek forces caused heavy German losses and prevented any further large‑scale German airborne operations during the war.
