Visit the Asclepeion of Kos

The Asclepeion is one of the most remarkable ancient sites on Kos. It was a temple complex dedicated to Asclepius and, in the ancient world, one of the most famous sanctuaries devoted to the god of medicine. Its importance went beyond the island: the site was one of the most significant sanctuaries dedicated to Asclepius in all of Ancient Greece.

The sanctuary stands about 85 metres above sea level and approximately 3.6 kilometres from Kos Town. Its setting is defined by hills to the southeast and flatter ground to the northwest. The highest point in the surrounding area reaches 572 metres, around 3.2 kilometres south of the sanctuary, adding a distinctive landscape to the archaeological experience.

The Asclepeion was excavated in 1902 by archaeologist Rudolf Herzog. He was also the grandfather of filmmaker Werner Herzog, a detail that links the site’s archaeological history with a much more recent cultural figure.
