What to see in Pondicherry

The most interesting places to visit in Pondicherry are concentrated around the city centre and White Town, making them well suited to exploring on foot. The route moves between churches, a Hindu temple, a mosque, museums, a spiritual community, and reminders of the city’s older history.

Sri Aurobindo Ashram

The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a spiritual community in the city associated with Sri Aurobindo, an Indian philosopher, and Mirra Alfassa, known as the Mother. Founded in 1926, it became one of India’s best-known spiritual communities and continues to combine spiritual life, education, and an urban setting.

The Ashram’s Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education has more than 400 students, while about 1,200 people are part of the wider community.

Manakula Vinayagar Temple

Dedicated to Ganesha, Manakula Vinayagar Temple is both a pilgrimage site and a major attraction in Pondicherry. Its history reaches back to before the arrival of the French and is described as extending to before 1666.

Inside, colourful paintings of Ganesha cover the ceiling and continue across the surrounding walls. The temple’s name is understood to come from “Manal Kulathu Vinayagar”, referring to Ganesha associated with a sand pond. The temple also survived attempts at destruction during the tenure of Dupleix, helped by protests from the Hindu population and wider political pressures.

Pondicherry Museum

The Pondicherry Museum is particularly known for its collection of Chola bronze sculptures. It holds 81 bronzes created using the lost-wax technique during the period of the Chola Empire.

The museum also displays artefacts from excavations at Arikamedu, a Yavana, or Greek, trading port that existed near modern Pondicherry from the late first century BCE into the first and second centuries CE. It is a useful place to connect the city’s artistic heritage with its much older international history.

Our Lady of Angels Church

Facing the Bay of Bengal in White Town, Our Lady of Angels Church is also known as Église Notre-Dame des Anges and Dumas Church, after Dumas Street. Built in 1855 under Napoleon III, it was designed by the architect and engineer Louis Guerre.

Its Greco-Roman, or neoclassical, style distinguishes it from the city’s other churches. The parish has been served by several religious orders, and the church is especially notable for Masses in French, Tamil, and English. It is also called White Chapel or Kaps Koil.

Immaculate Conception Cathedral

The Immaculate Conception Cathedral stands in the centre of Puducherry on Mission Street. The present building was completed in 1791 during the period of French establishment in India, after three earlier buildings had occupied the site.

Its Jesuit Baroque design and Catholic history make it one of Pondicherry’s important religious landmarks. The cathedral is also known locally as Samba Kovil, derived from Saint Paul’s Kovil, with Kovil meaning church. Although it was originally dedicated to Saint Paul, it is now dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary.

Pondicherry

The city itself is one of the places to experience rather than simply tick off a list. Historically known as Pondicherry, it was officially renamed Puducherry in 2006; Pandi and Puduvai are also used as shorter names.

Its past as the capital of French India remains visible in the city’s cultural memory, while Tamil language and traditions remain a strong part of local life. Pondicherry was also formerly associated with intense port activity connected with cotton weaving. Beyond the city, the wider Union Territory contains four geographically unconnected districts: Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahé, and Yanam.

Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Near the railway station on the city’s south boulevard, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is known for its oriental Gothic Revival style. The church was begun in 1902 and completed in 1907.

Inside, stained-glass panels depict scenes from the life of Christ and figures from the Catholic Church. Archbishop Gandhi consecrated the basilica and celebrated its first Mass on December 17, 1907. A new parish was established around the church on January 27, 1908.

Pondicherry lighthouse

The Pondicherry Lighthouse, also known as Puducherry Kalangarai Vilakkam, is another of the city’s landmarks. The lighthouse was built in 1979 and adds a more recent point of reference to Pondicherry’s long coastal history.

Meeran Mosque

Meeran Mosque, also called Meerapalli or Mirapalli, is a Sufi mosque in Pondicherry. It was constructed during the first quarter of the eighteenth century, although another account attributes its construction to the Nawab of Arcot around 350 years ago.

Its quiet presence reflects the long history of Muslim worship within the city and adds another religious tradition to Pondicherry’s diverse urban character.

Puducherry Museum

The Puducherry Museum brings together the heritage of the region under the Department of Art and Culture of the Government of Puducherry. Its collections reflect a history that reaches back to at least the second century before the Common Era.

Ancient Greek and Roman geographical accounts referred to the port as Poduke, highlighting the long-standing connections between this part of the coast and cultures beyond India.

Arikamedu

A little south of Pondicherry, in the surroundings of Kakkayanthope, Arikamedu preserves the remains of a settlement with an international trading past. Sir Mortimer Wheeler carried out the first major excavations in 1945, followed by Jean-Marie Casal between 1947 and 1950. Later investigations by Vimala Begley, from 1989 to 1992, broadened the understanding of the site.

Arikamedu is now considered to have existed from the second century BCE to the eighth century CE. Finds including Indo-Pacific beads, red and black ceramics, and grave-marking objects known in Tamil as Pandukal help reveal the changing history of the settlement.
