What to See in Canggu
Visit Gereja Roh Kudus in Babakan
Gereja Roh Kudus is a Roman Catholic parish church in Babakan, within the Diocese of Denpasar. Its distinctive Balinese architectural style reflects the community it was created for: a parish made up entirely of native Balinese people.
The church was established through the work of Father Norbert Shadeg SVD, described as Bali’s first missionary. Its foundation stone was laid on August 22, 1965, and the building was inaugurated on December 8, 1967, by Bishop Paulus Sani Kleden SVD, the first bishop of the Diocese of Denpasar.
The inauguration also marked the formal establishment of Babakan Parish as separate from the Most Holy Trinity Parish in Tuka. For visitors interested in what to see in Canggu beyond the beaches and cafés, Gereja Roh Kudus provides an insight into the area’s religious history and Balinese architectural expression.
