What to See in Pecatu
When planning what to see in Pecatu, two primary religious landmarks define the area’s rich heritage, connecting centuries of spiritual tradition in Indonesia.
Pura Luhur
Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of Bali’s most spectacular sea temples, perched dramatically on the southwestern tip of the Bukit Peninsula. This is the only Balinese sea temple that also holds a place among the nine directional temples, known as Pura Kahyangan Jagat, which are believed to protect the island from evil spirits. The temple sits atop a steep limestone cliff that juts out into the Indian Ocean, rising about 70 meters above the sea below.
In front of the temple, you will notice a small sacred forest called alas kekeran, which serves to maintain the sanctity of the grounds. The temple is dedicated to Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa in his manifestation as Rudra, a powerful deity in Balinese Hinduism. The history here goes back to the 11th century, when a holy priest named Empu Kuturan used this place for worship and established the traditional village system with all its rules. Later, another revered figure, Dang Hyang Nirartha, arrived in Bali around the late 1550s and completed his sacred journey here through a spiritual release known as Moksa or Ngeluhur, which is where the temple gets its name.
Saint Sylvester Church, Pecatu
Away from the sea cliffs, Saint Sylvester Church is a Catholic parish church located in the Pecatu area of Badung Regency. It is part of the Denpasar Diocese and serves as the parish church for the local Catholic community. The church is named after Saint Sylvester, who served as Pope from 314 to 335, and stands as an important place of worship for the faithful in this part of the region.
