What to see in Tampaksiring
Istana Tampaksiring
Istana Tampaksiring is one of Indonesia’s presidential palaces and stands among 19 hectares of gardens and pavilions in the cool highlands of Gianyar. Unlike most of the country’s presidential palaces, which were inherited from the Dutch colonial era, this complex was built after independence, between 1957 and 1963.
It was the first presidential palace designed by Indonesians for Indonesians. Its architecture combines modernist principles with traditional Balinese details: clean lines and open spaces sit alongside carved stone, alang-alang thatched roofs and candi bentar, the split gates characteristic of Bali.
The palace is spread across separate pavilions rather than gathered into one monumental block. The grounds include buildings for state functions, guest residences and staff. The main palace stands on higher ground, with views towards Pura Tirta Empul and, beyond it, Mount Agung. This orientation connects the modern Indonesian state with one of Bali’s spiritual landscapes.
Tampaksiring is part of Bali, an island known for its temples, rice terraces and distinctive Hindu culture.
Gunung Kawi
Gunung Kawi is an eleventh-century funerary complex in the Valley of the Balinese Kings, spread along both sides of the Pakerisan River northeast of Ubud. Its ten shrines were cut directly into the sheer cliff face, rather than assembled from blocks of stone. Each shrine is protected by a niche around seven metres high.
The site is thought to honour King Anak Wungsu of the Udayana dynasty and his favourite queens. One theory identifies the five shrines on the east bank with King Udayana, his queen Mahendradatta and their three sons: Airlangga, Anak Wungsu and Marakata.
One of the most evocative details is an inscription on the northern shrine on the east side. The words “Haji Lumahing Jalu” are legible and mean that the king made a temple here, offering a rare direct connection with the eleventh century.
The Pakerisan River valley gives Gunung Kawi a setting as memorable as its carvings. Its cliffside shrines are among the most distinctive traces of Bali’s early royal history.
Mengening Temple
Mengening Temple is a peaceful Hindu sanctuary in the Pakerisan River valley. Dedicated to Shiva, it was built in the early eleventh century during the reign of King Marakata. The river flows throughout the year through the lush valley below the temple.
The site was first recorded by Dutch archaeologist W. F. Sutterheim in the mid-1920s, although his notes were brief. In 1960, Bernet Kempers identified the remains of a shrine on the small hill, leading to more extensive excavation.
Archaeologists found the temple largely intact, including a Lingga Yoni inside the inner sanctum. This sacred symbol of Shiva remains venerated by local worshippers, giving Mengening a continuing religious role as well as archaeological importance.
