What to See in Colditz

Colditz Castle

Colditz Castle is the essential starting point for a visit. It rises on a rocky spur above the town and the Zwickauer Mulde, between Hartha and Grimma. Although the site began as a medieval fortified estate, much of the complex visible today reflects its Renaissance development after 1404 under the Wettin rulers, including Ernest of Saxony and Frederick the Wise.

Around 1600, the castle was expanded as a residence for the widowed Electress Sophia. This period added pleasure gardens and richly decorated interiors, giving the building a history that extends well beyond its later military use. A castle park mentioned in 1523 also connects Colditz with one of the earliest zoological gardens in what is now Germany.

The castle’s international reputation, however, comes from the Second World War. It became Oflag IVc, a high-security prisoner-of-war camp for Allied officers who had already attempted to escape from other camps. Prisoners devised numerous escape plans, and several tunnels can still be seen. The story of their ingenuity later reached a wider audience through memoirs, books and films, especially in Britain.

Oflag IV-C

Oflag IV-C is the museum site dedicated to the prisoner-of-war history of Colditz Castle. The German Army operated the camp inside the medieval castle for captured Allied officers. The prisoners’ elaborate escape attempts, including some that succeeded, became central to the place’s historical identity.

Guided tours, exhibitions and the museum focus on the lives of the people held there and the plans they created to escape. Visiting Oflag IV-C adds detail to the castle’s wartime story, connecting the building’s rooms and structures with the individual experiences of its prisoners.

St. Egidien Church

St. Egidien Church, also known as Stadtkirche St. Aegidien or St. Ägidien, is one of Colditz’s distinctive religious landmarks. It is a Gothic hall church belonging to the Colditz parish within the Colditzer Muldenland parish association of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony.

Rathaus Colditz

The Mulde

Just outside Colditz, two rivers meet to form the Mulde. The Zwickauer Mulde and the Freiberger Mulde rise in the Ore Mountains before joining near Sermuth; from there, the Mulde continues north through Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt and eventually joins the Elbe.

The river is 124 kilometres long and non-navigable. Its history also includes major floods, notably in August 2002 and June 2013. The older name Milda has been interpreted as meaning “the water-rich one”, while another explanation connects the name with the mills once operating along the river.

Podelwitz Manor, also known as Wasserschloss Podelwitz, stands beside the Freiberger Mulde in Podelwitz, a district of Colditz. The listed manor lies along the Muldetal cycle route and has a distinctive riverside setting. Visitors travelling on the river can reach it by way of a staircase.
