Schlossberg and the former abbey

The Schlossberg is the sandstone ridge at the heart of Quedlinburg. At its summit stands an exceptional medieval ensemble comprising a castle, a former imperial abbey and the Romanesque collegiate church of St. Servatius.

The story of the hill begins in 936, when Queen Matilda persuaded her son Otto I to establish a community of noble women there as a memorial to her husband, King Henry the Fowler. Quedlinburg Abbey became a self-ruling imperial abbey, whose abbesses held the rank of princesses and governed the surrounding territory directly under the emperor for nearly nine centuries.

The abbey was dissolved in 1802 during the secularization of church lands. Its residential buildings later became Schloss Quedlinburg. The twin towers and flat-roofed silhouette of Stiftskirche St. Servatius have dominated the hill since the late eleventh century.

Domschatz Quedlinburg

Inside Stiftskirche St. Servatius, the Quedlinburg Cathedral Treasury displays 63 precious objects in two rooms. They once belonged to Quedlinburg Abbey, and many were gifts from the Liudolfing dynasty, the family of the Ottonian emperors.

The collection reflects the religious importance, imperial connections and wealth of the medieval abbey. It is one of the key places to visit on the Schlossberg.

St. Wiperti

A short walk southwest of the castle hill, St. Wiperti recalls the Saxon-Ottonian dynasty. The site once served as a royal court, while the church and its crypt are notable examples of Romanesque architecture.

The crypt has survived with its sturdy columns and vaulted ceiling largely intact, offering a particularly direct impression of medieval construction. The complex is protected as a historic monument under the name Wipertiklooster.

Abteigarten

The Abteigarten is a protected historic garden beside Brühlpark. Together, the two gardens form a continuous green space in Quedlinburg and belong to the Gartenträume Sachsen-Anhalt network.

It is a quieter contrast to the stone buildings and narrow streets around the castle hill.

Klosterkirche Münzenberg

The Münzenberg is one of Quedlinburg’s historic districts, and its ruined Klosterkirche Münzenberg is also known as St. Marien auf dem Münzenberg. In its time, it was the town’s third major pre-Romanesque church space, alongside the collegiate church and St. Wiperti.

The church ceased to function as a sacred space in 1525 and later fell into ruin. In the 1990s and 2000s, Siegfried Behrens and his wife undertook the work of making much of the site accessible again.

St. Benedikti, or the Marktkirche

St. Benedikti stands in the heart of Quedlinburg and is also known as the Marktkirche. It serves as the parish church of the Protestant congregation in the town and has remained part of local community life for generations.

Goetzsches Mausoleum

On Marktkirchhof street, north of Sankt-Benedikti-Kirche, the Goetzsche Mausoleum stands among the half-timbered houses. It is also known as the Grufthaus Gebhardt or the Grufthaus Goetze.

This protected burial house is a modest reminder of the prominent families who shaped life in Quedlinburg’s old town.

Fachwerkmuseum

The Fachwerkmuseum is housed in a protected half-timbered building and belongs to the Quedlinburg Municipal Museums. Its subject is the construction tradition that gives the town much of its distinctive appearance: half-timbered architecture.

Gernrode Abbey and St. Cyriakus

Gernrode Abbey lies beyond Quedlinburg’s central landmarks. Its church, St. Cyriakus, is one of the few remaining examples of Ottonian architecture in the world.

Margrave Gero founded the church between 959 and 965 as the collegiate church of the abbey he established. Much of the building retains the appearance of the tenth-century structure, following careful nineteenth-century restoration. The western apse was added around 1130, while the nave, transept and eastern apse essentially follow Gero’s original design.

The church became Protestant in 1521 after Abbess Elisabeth von Weida embraced the Reformation and secularized the abbey. The evangelical congregation of Gernrode still worships there today.

Historic watchtowers and waymarkers

Several protected monuments around Quedlinburg preserve the practical history of travel and defense. Bicklingswarte, southeast of the town, was built as a signal tower in a network that warned of approaching danger. Seweckenwarte, also called Sewekenwarte, served as an early warning post east-southeast of Quedlinburg.

To the northwest, Steinholzwarte now serves as an observation tower, with views back towards Quedlinburg’s rooftops and across the Harz foothills. The Histor.
