Fondation Maeght
The Fondation Maeght is one of France’s landmark destinations for modern and contemporary art. Located on the Colline des Gardettes above Saint-Paul-de-Vence, it brings together a major art collection, distinctive architecture and a sculpture garden.
Marguerite and Aimé Maeght created the foundation in 1964. Publishers, printers, art dealers and gallery owners, they built close relationships with artists that shaped the collection and led to the creation of France’s first independent foundation dedicated to modern art.
The building was designed specifically for presenting modern and contemporary art by Josep Lluís Sert, the Catalan architect. Its spaces accommodate paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, collages and ceramics. The foundation was inaugurated in 1964 by André Malraux.
The collection includes more than 13,000 works by major artists from the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Among the artists represented are Joan Miró, Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Marc Chagall, Fernand Léger, Jean Arp, Wassily Kandinsky, Ellsworth Kelly and Sam Francis.
