What to See in Sagunto

Sagunto Castle

Sagunto Castle stretches across the hill above the town as a long defensive complex rather than a single building. Its history reaches back more than two thousand years, beginning with the Iberian settlement known as Arse.

The castle is closely associated with the siege of Saguntum in 219 BC. Carthaginian forces led by Hannibal Barca confronted the town, which was allied with Rome. The siege lasted eight months, continuing into 218 BCE, and ended when the inhabitants surrendered. The episode became the opening event and immediate cause of the Second Punic War.

Later periods left further marks on the fortress. Although relatively few Roman remains survive within the castle, much of the visible wall structure is Islamic in origin. During the Islamic period, the site was known as Murbĩtar and Morvedre. After Islamic rule ended, the defences were substantially altered, strengthened and modernised. French forces besieged and took the castle during the Napoleonic Wars, after which its defences were repaired.

The complex is divided into seven separate enclosures, including the Plaza de Almenara and Plaza de Armas. Walking through its different sections reveals how the hill was repeatedly adapted to military needs and offers a direct way to read Sagunto’s layered history.

Museu Històric de Sagunt

The Museu Històric de Sagunt, also known as the Archaeological Museum of Sagunto, provides context for the remains scattered around the city. Its collections bring together objects and discoveries from Sagunt and the surrounding area.

Some pieces were found by chance during building works, while others were recovered through archaeological excavations. Research carried out across the city and its surroundings has continued to enrich the museum’s holdings. A visit here helps connect the objects on display with the long history of Sagunto’s streets, hill and archaeological sites.

Iglesia Arciprestal de Santa María

The Iglesia Arciprestal de Santa María is also known as the Iglesia de Santa María, the Parroquia de Santa María and the Iglesia de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora. These names refer to the same important parish church, whose official dedication is reflected in its full name.

The church was recognized as a cultural property of interest on October 25, 1982. It forms part of the historic religious landscape of Sagunto and fits naturally into a walk through the old quarter.

Església del Salvador

The parish church of El Salvador, or Església del Salvador, stands at number 19 on Carrer València, in the neighbourhood that shares its name. Its origins date to the thirteenth century, when it was built in an early Gothic style.

The building also records later changes. Reforms continued through the eighteenth century, and the church contains works dating from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century. Its architecture and contents therefore reflect several centuries of religious and artistic development.

Església de la Mare de Déu del Bon Succés

The Església de la Mare de Déu del Bon Succés is another cultural property within Sagunto. It adds a further historic religious landmark to the city’s old streets, alongside Santa María and El Salvador.

Including this church in a walking route shows how closely the city’s religious heritage is woven into its historic fabric, rather than concentrated in a single monument.

Cárcel Castle

Cárcel Castle, also known as Castell de Càrcer or Castell de Cárcel, is a walled enclosure in the municipality of Sagunto and is recognized as an Asset of Cultural Interest.

Its layout is almost rectangular, although one of the longer sides curves outward. A tower stood inside the walls. The compact form of the enclosure offers a different perspective on Sagunto’s defensive architecture from the much larger complex of Sagunto Castle.

Creu de la Victòria

Creu de la Victòria is a small wayside cross in Sagunto. It offers a quiet point of interest while exploring the surrounding area and forms part of the city’s wider historic landscape.

Església de la Mare de Déu de Begonya del Port de Sagunt

In Port de Sagunt, the Església de la Mare de Déu de Begonya is a cultural property and a local place of interest. It broadens the visit beyond the hilltop historic centre, adding another religious landmark to Sagunto’s heritage.
