The building was designed by Málaga architect Enrique Atencia in a Western Arab style. Its exterior combines red plaster, colourful tiles and intricate bas-reliefs. Inside, Nasrid-style stucco covers the walls, echoing the geometric decoration associated with the Alhambra.

Castillo Monumento Colomares

Castillo Monumento Colomares is an unusual monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus and the discovery of America. It was not built as a medieval fortress: Dr. Martín created it as a highly personal architectural interpretation of Columbus’s voyages.

The monument covers 1,500 square metres and brings together Byzantine, Romanesque, Arabic and Gothic elements. Brick, stone and cement form a complex composition of towers and walls, turning the story of the Discovery of America into a stone narrative.

One of its most surprising details is a tiny church dedicated to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary. Measuring just 1.96 square metres, it holds a Guinness World Record as the smallest church in the world. It is consecrated and still functional.

The Benalmádena Stupa, also called the Enlightenment Stupa, is one of the area’s most unexpected landmarks. This traditional Tibetan Buddhist monument rises 33 metres above the hillside and overlooks the Mediterranean coastline. It is the tallest stupa in Europe.

Its whitewashed dome is topped by a gilded spire, while the eyes of the Buddha face the four cardinal directions. The monument follows classical Tibetan design, with symbolic meaning attributed to its different parts, from the base representing earth to the pinnacle representing wisdom.

The stupa was inaugurated on 5 October 2003. It was the final project of Lopon Tsechu Rinpoche, a Bhutanese master who dedicated his later years to building stupas across Europe as monuments to peace.

Visitors can walk clockwise along the path around the base, following the traditional circumambulation practice. Even without a religious framework, the route provides a quiet way to experience the monument and its hillside surroundings.
