Cueva de Nerja

The Cueva de Nerja lies in Maro, within the municipality of Nerja. Its cave system extends for almost five kilometres, although only part of it is open to visitors.

In the accessible galleries, stairs and paved paths lead through spaces filled with stalactites and stalagmites. One chamber forms a natural amphitheatre where concerts are regularly held. The cave was discovered in modern times on 12 January 1959, when five friends entered through a narrow natural shaft known as La Mina. A third entrance was created in 1960 to make access easier.

The system is divided into Nerja I, which contains the public galleries, and Nerja II, which is closed to the public and includes further galleries discovered later. The cave also contains archaeological remains, while the interpretation of its paintings has changed over time as research has developed.

Torre de la Caleta

Torre de la Caleta is a historic watchtower in the natural park of the Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs. It stands beside the shoreline between Cañuelo Cove, Fraile Rock and Cantarriján Beach.

Also known as Torre de Cantarriján or Torre del Cañuelo, the tower was built from the sixteenth century onward. Its tapered, truncated-cone shape reflects its original role as a coastal lookout. The tower occupies the southwestern end of Caleta Hill, in the municipality of Nerja.
