What to see in Esslingen am Neckar

The following places form a varied route through Esslingen’s historic centre and its surrounding districts.

Kielmeyerhaus

At Marktplatz 3, the Kielmeyerhaus recalls an aspect of Esslingen’s working past. The building was once a hospital wine press, linking this historic address with the production and handling of wine.

Wettersäule

The Wettersäule is a historic weather station dating from 1895. Its instruments included a thermometer, barometer and hydrometer, as well as a distance table. Rather than presenting just one measurement, the structure gathered several kinds of practical information for people passing through the city.

City Walls of Esslingen

Also known as Esslinger Burg, the City Walls of Esslingen are a surviving part of the town’s medieval fortifications. The walls stand above the former and present city centre, offering a reminder of how the settlement was once defended.

Saint Nicholas Chapel

Saint Nicholas Chapel, or Nikolauskapelle, stands on Esslingen’s Inner Bridge. Built around 1300 and first mentioned in a document in 1350, it is the oldest surviving building on the bridge and the only remaining one of the city’s original seventeen chapels.

Its Gothic form includes a distinctive bell gable. The chapel was originally dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron of boatmen and raftsmen. Over the centuries, it was converted into a sales stall, housed the first workshop of the Friedr. Dick file factory from 1822 to 1848, and later served as storage for antiquities.

Wasserhaus

The Wasserhaus is a weir in Esslingen am Neckar. This piece of water infrastructure adds a practical, industrial element to a walk through a town otherwise known for its churches, bridges and historic buildings.

Frauenkirche

The Frauenkirche is one of Esslingen’s most prominent landmarks. This evangelical church is a protected monument and is regarded as the first Gothic hall church in southwestern Germany, as well as one of the oldest hall churches in Swabia.

Construction took almost two hundred years and involved the Ensinger and Böblinger families of architects. The building was completed in 1516, while its tower rises to 72 metres. The southern tympanum is especially worth examining: its exterior sculptures depict scenes from the Last Judgment and the life of Mary.

Münster St. Paul

At the western edge of the market square, Münster St. Paul represents Esslingen’s early Gothic architecture. The Catholic church was built in the thirteenth century as part of a former Dominican monastery and is regarded as the oldest surviving church of a mendicant order in Germany.

Its position alongside the Protestant Stadtkirche St. Dionys and the hillside Frauenkirche creates one of the defining groups of religious buildings in Esslingen’s centre.

Stadtkirche St. Dionys

The Gothic Stadtkirche St. Dionys stands on the southern side of the Marktplatz. This Protestant church is a protected historic monument and one of the buildings that gives Esslingen its distinctive appearance.

Together with Münster St. Paul and the Frauenkirche, it forms an architectural ensemble that can be appreciated from the town centre.

Franziskanerkirche

In Esslingen’s eastern Old Town, the Franziskanerkirche preserves only its choir. This surviving fragment reflects the building’s changing history: it was once the church of the Franciscan order and was temporarily used as the Catholic Church of St. George in the nineteenth century.

The church is also known as the Hintere Kirche, or Rear Church.

Alte Zimmerei

The Alte Zimmerei is another historic building in Esslingen. It is one of the smaller architectural details that reward a slower walk through the Old Town, where the route connects major churches with less prominent buildings.

Central-Theater

The Central-Theater began as a cinema, later became a cultural centre and is now used as a theatre. Located at Rossmarkt, the Central is described as the oldest surviving cinema in Baden-Württemberg, giving the building an important place in Esslingen’s cultural history.

Serach

Serach, in the northern part of Esslingen, is primarily a residential district. Visiting it provides a different view of the city beyond the historic centre and its best-known monuments.

Evangelische Kirche Sulzgries

The Evangelische Kirche Sulzgries is a parish church in the Sulzgries district. It is recognised as a protected cultural monument under Baden-Württemberg’s heritage protection law.

Martinskirche

Martinskirche is an evangelical parish church in Oberesslingen, one of Esslingen’s districts. The church is among the area’s protected cultural monuments.

St. Bernhardt

St. Bernhardt is the Protestant parish church of the Sankt Bernhardt district. It offers a quieter connection with Esslingen’s local communities beyond the central streets.
