Duke Ulrich of Württemberg ordered its construction in 1538, after returning from exile, as part of a programme to create seven inner fortresses. The works continued until 1566.

The palace initially had mainly military purposes, although it was also used for hunting. Its role later changed as its importance as a residence grew. In 1594, when plague affected Stuttgart, Duke Frederick the First moved his court to Kirchheim. More than two centuries later, the building became the dower house of the Duchy and later of the Kingdom of Württemberg.

Today, its rooms are arranged and furnished as they were during the residence of its last dowager, Henriette von Nassau-Weilburg.
