What to see in Viana do Castelo

The best way to discover Viana do Castelo is to follow its historic centre from the former port area towards its churches, museums and Renaissance square. These are the main places to look out for along the way.

Museu da Fábrica do Chocolate

The Museu da Fábrica do Chocolate is dedicated to chocolate’s production, transformation, history and consumption. Opened in 2014, the museum occupies 500 square metres divided into five interconnected spaces that form a single circuit.

Igreja de São Salvador das Almas

Also known as the Capela das Almas or Igreja das Almas, this small Romanesque church dates from the thirteenth century. It is one of the oldest religious buildings in the area and is closely connected with the city’s origins: Viana do Castelo grew from a riverside port near the church, which became its first mother church.

Igreja Matriz de Viana do Castelo

The Igreja Matriz, also called the Cathedral of St. Mary the Great, has a fortress-like exterior, with two battlement-crowned towers. Built in the fifteenth century, it retains a Romanesque character and has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1953.

Its Gothic portal is one of the principal details to see, with sculpted scenes from the Passion of Christ and figures of the Apostles. Inside, the Latin-cross plan has three naves separated by arches supported by sturdy pillars.

Casa de Miguel de Vasconcelos

This historic house is also known as the Casa dos Lunas or Casa dos Medalhões. The alternative names refer to the medallion-style decorations on its façade, which make the building a distinctive stop in the old centre.

Museu do Traje de Viana do Castelo

The Costume Museum explores the identity and ethnographic heritage of Viana do Castelo through traditional costume, one of the city’s most important cultural symbols. It was created in 1997.

The building adds another layer to the visit. Constructed between 1954 and 1958, it reflects the architectural characteristics of the Estado Novo period and housed the local branch of the Banco de Portugal until 1996.

Chafariz da Praça da Rainha

In the eastern part of the square, opposite the old town hall, stands the Chafariz da Praça da Rainha. This Renaissance fountain was designed by João Lopes the Elder, a master stonemason from Porto.

It is the last surviving example of three monumental fountains created by him across the Minho region and into Pontevedra in Galicia. The fountain replaced an earlier one made by Fernão Anes in 1512 and João Gonçalves in 1523.

Praça da República and Igreja da Misericórdia

Praça da República is one of the central squares of Viana do Castelo and brings several important buildings together. The Igreja da Misericórdia stands here beside the former hospital, a complex classified as a National Monument since 1910.

The hospital was built in 1598 as a three-storey Renaissance building with a white façade and galleries of arches supported by columns carved with caryatids. The church was added in the eighteenth century. Its single nave and main chapel combine Mannerist and Baroque elements.

Teatro Sá de Miranda

The Teatro Sá de Miranda, also known as the Teatro Municipal Sá de Miranda, is one of northern Portugal’s historic theatres. It is believed to be the country’s fifth-oldest theatre that still retains its original features, and its 400-seat capacity gives it an intimate character.

Palácio dos Viscondes da Carreira

This notable historic building is also known as the Palácio dos Távoras or the Palácio da Carreira. It has also served as Viana do Castelo’s town hall, adding an important civic chapter to its history.

Arquivo Distrital de Viana do Castelo

The district archive preserves the written memory of Viana do Castelo District. It offers a different perspective on the city’s heritage, focused not on a single monument but on the documents that record the region’s past.

Museu de Artes Decorativas

Tucked away in Largo de São Domingos, the Museu de Artes Decorativas was originally known as the Museu de Arte Regional. Its earlier name reflects its connection with regional art and decorative traditions.

Igreja de Santa Cruz and Convento de São Domingos

The Igreja de Santa Cruz was once part of the Convento de São Domingos, a monastic complex commissioned by Bartolomeu dos Mártires in 1560 and completed in 1571. The church contains the tomb of São Bartolomeu dos Mártires, the figure who ordered its construction.
