What to See in Bydgoszcz

St. Martin and St. Nicholas Cathedral

Beside the Brda River, St. Martin and St. Nicholas Cathedral is the most valuable architectural monument in Bydgoszcz’s Old Town. This Gothic church dates from the fifteenth century and serves both as a parish church and as the cathedral of the Diocese of Bydgoszcz.

The cathedral became a cathedral on March 25, 2004, by decision of Pope John Paul the Second. It is also a shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The main altar contains the crowned image of Our Lady of Beautiful Love, dating from 1467, while the north aisle has another crowned Marian image, Our Lady of the Scapular, from 1700.

Barka Lemara and the granaries by the Brda

Barka Lemara, also known as the Lemara barge, preserves traditions connected with life on the water and the work of river boatmen. Nearby, Spichrze nad Brdą—the Bydgoszcz Museum by the Brda River—occupies historic warehouse buildings in the Old Town.

The granaries are important landmarks in their own right. Their position beside the river connects Bydgoszcz’s historic architecture with the city’s waterborne traditions, while the museum offers another way to understand the character of the riverside.

The Brda River

Poor Clares’ Church

At the meeting point of Gdańska, Mostowa, Jagiellońska and Focha Streets stands the Church of the Poor Clares, also known as Klaryski or the Rector’s Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was previously associated with several other dedications, including the Holy Spirit, Saint Adalbert, Saint Clare and Saint Barbara.

Regional Museum in Bydgoszcz

The Leon Wyczółkowski Regional Museum is an ensemble of cultural institutions gathered under one museum. It was created in 1923 and commemorates Leon Wyczółkowski.

Saint Andrew Bobola’s Church

Saint Andrew Bobola’s Church, also known as Jezuici, stands on Kościelecki Square. The Roman Catholic church is dedicated to Saint Andrew Bobola, the Polish Jesuit, and was completed in 1903.

Its design was created by the German architect Heinrich Seeling. The building was added to the Heritage List of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship on December 15, 1998.

St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church

On Wolności Square, the richly decorated Church of Saints Peter and Paul is dedicated to the two apostles who are its patron saints. Its interior polychrome decoration was created in 1957 by Władysław Drapiewski from Pelplin and Leon Drapniewski from Poznań.

The church was added to the Pomeranian Heritage List on October 5, 1971.

Marian Rejewski monument

At the junction of Gdańska and Śniadeckich Streets, the Marian Rejewski monument presents the Bydgoszcz-born cryptologist seated on a granite bench beside a model of the Enigma cipher machine.

Rejewski lived from 1905 to 1980 and broke the secrets of the German Enigma machine in 1932. The bronze sculpture was created by Michał Kubiak, with the model of the cipher machine providing a direct reference to his achievement.

Vincent de Paul Basilica

The Basilica of Saint Vincent de Paul on Ossoliński Alley has a distinctive neoclassical form inspired by Rome’s Pantheon. The ensemble includes the church, a monastery and a park, all dedicated to Saint Vincent de Paul.

The church was designed by Polish architect Adam Ballenstedt and completed in 1945. It was added to the Heritage List of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship in 1996, and on June 3, 1997, it was granted the title of minor basilica in a ceremony chaired by Pope John Paul the Second.

Church of the Savior

The Church of the Savior, or Kościół Zbawiciela, stands along Warszawska Street by Savior Square. It is a neo-Gothic church belonging to Bydgoszcz’s Evangelical Augsburg Confession parish.

The building was originally known as Christ Church and kept that name until 1945. Its neo-Gothic design is its defining feature, and it has been included on the Heritage List of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship since November 7, 2005.

Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace

The Bernardine Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace stands on Bernardyńska Street and is also known as Bernardyni. The church dates from 1557 and originally had Saint George as its patron.

In 1971, Polish primate Stefan Wyszyński changed its title to Our Lady Queen of Peace, the name it bears today.

Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

At Piastowski Square, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a Roman Catholic parish church in the western part of Bydgoszcz’s Śródmieście district. Its Polish name is Kościół pw. Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa.

The church stands at 5 Piastowski Square and is listed on the Heritage List of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship.

Saint Anthony of Padua Church

Saint Anthony of Padua Church stands at 3 Głucha Street in the western district of Czyżkówko. This Catholic church is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua and is included on the Pomeranian Heritage List.

Exploseum

Exploseum occupies the former DAG Fabrik Bromberg munitions factory. The museum combines industrial architecture, twentieth-century technology and an underground route through the factory buildings.

It presents the history of the DAG concern and the Bromberg factory, as well as the development of military technology, weapons and explosive materials. A significant part of the trail runs through tunnels connecting the factory buildings, making the former industrial site part of the exhibition itself.

Muzeum Wojsk Lądowych

Muzeum Wojsk Lądowych is Poland’s only museum devoted to the land forces. Its collections focus on the military history of Pomerania and Kuyavia from the Wielkopolskie Uprising of 1918 and 1919 onward.

The museum displays infantry and motorized military equipment, along with weapons. It was formerly known as the Pomeranian Military Museum and adopted its current name in 2010.
