Iglesia de Santa María

The Church of Santa María stands in the heart of Besalú and has been recognised as a cultural asset of national importance for the Garrotxa region. Its stone façade and interior reflect centuries of religious life in the town.

Castell de Besalú

Perched on a hilltop above the town, the remains of Besalú’s castle once commanded the whole valley. Although only fragments of the walls survive, you can still see the original doorway that opened onto Carrer Tallaferro and a reconstructed square tower that hints at the fortress’s former strength. Inside the old enclosure stood the church of Santa María, consecrated in 1055 and later serving an Augustinian canonry.

Museu de Miniatures i Microminiatures de Besalú

Housed in the former Cal Coro textile factory, this museum was home to Micromundi, a collection of over two thousand tiny masterpieces from artists worldwide. Opened in August 2007, it was the first of its kind in Catalonia and occupied four hundred square metres of accessible exhibition space. The archaeological site of the Besalú Synagogue preserves the remains of a medieval synagogue, a mikvé (ritual bath) dating to the twelfth century, a courtyard, and a prayer room. The mikvé, fed by a natural spring, is one of the oldest and best‑preserved examples in Europe, with stone steps descending into the water that once served the town’s Jewish community.

Prat de Sant Pere

This spacious open square lies at the centre of Besalú and takes its name from the Monastery of Sant Pere that anchors it. Lined with historic mansions—including the former Casa Llaudes (now the Solà Morales family home), the house of Amadeo Sala, and the imposing Ferrer residence—it offers a pleasant place to pause and admire the town’s architectural ensemble.
