Salou is a seaside town in Catalonia with a distinctive architectural and maritime heritage. Among the best things to do in Salou are exploring its historic churches, discovering Casa Bonet and the Museum of Contemporary Enamel, and seeing the defensive Torre Vella. Neywo has a free audio guide for Salou with 6 narrated places, helping you explore the town at your own pace.

What to See in Salou

Salou’s historic centre brings together religious buildings, architectural landmarks and reminders of the town’s past. These are the main places to include in a visit.

Torre Vella de Salou

The Torre Vella de Salou is a surviving defensive landmark from a period when this part of the Catalan coast faced repeated pirate raids. Also known as the Tower of Charles the Fifth, it was built in 1530 to protect Salou from Sardinian and Saracen pirates and corsairs. The tower was ordered by Pere de Cardona, the Archbishop of Tarragona.

Its history reflects the continuing need for coastal protection. A permanent maritime lookout had been installed in 1384, followed by another defensive tower at Barenys in 1527. Raids continued during the sixteenth century, even after Torre Vella was completed.

The tower has largely retained its original exterior, including the heraldic shield of Pere de Cardona above the entrance. Its interior has changed over time. The adjoining building dates mostly from the eighteenth century, and a bridge connecting the two structures was added in the twentieth century.

Museu de l’Esmalt Contemporani

The Museu de l’Esmalt Contemporani, or Museum of Contemporary Enamel, is a museum in Salou. It was created in 1991 and offers a cultural stop alongside the town’s architectural and historic sights.

Santa Maria del Mar de Salou

Santa Maria del Mar de Salou, also known simply as Santa Maria del Mar, is a church that forms part of Salou’s heritage. It is included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia, making it an important place to notice while exploring the municipality.

Casa Bonet

Casa Bonet is a masia and one of Salou’s architectural points of interest. Its simple rural character connects it with the local landscape and heritage. The building is included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia.

Casa Bonet was built by the architect Domènec Sugranyes, who came from Reus. Travellers interested in the wider architectural heritage of the region can also explore Reus.

Monument a Jaume I

The Monument a Jaume I, also known as the Monumento a Jaime I, is a historic landmark in Salou. It is one of the places to look out for while walking through the town and adds another layer to Salou’s architectural and civic heritage.

Sant Ramon Nonat

Sant Ramon Nonat is a historic church in Salou and another notable part of the town’s heritage. It fits naturally into a walk through the historic core, together with the nearby architectural and cultural landmarks.
